WORKS

Practicum in the Biblioteca de Reserva |01 Barcelona

The main part of the books kept in the Biblioteca de Reserva of the Universitat de Barcelona comes from the convents of the Barcelona province, as a result of the depriving laws of Mendizábal in the first third of the 18th century. Nevertheless, provenances such as the University of Cervera as well as some donations produced along the time have increased the number and importance of the collection.

The fate of the books from the Barcelona convents, until their definitive location in the University buildings in 1880, was not free from removals, accidents and dangers. Many books were lost, but those that have been preserved show the ownership evidences of those who possessed them, in their great majority religious institutions, but also individuals and associations.

Lumina Pandit |02 Philippines

Four hundred years ago, Miguel de Benavides, O.P., Archbishop of Manila, bequeathed a modest amount of money and his personal library for the foundation of a “seminary–college” to prepare young men for the priesthood. This was the beginning of the university and its library, beloved by its various publics through the centuries. The UST has become a true icon in Philippine life, a mirror of its struggles to become a nation.

Guiuan Church (1595) |03 Samar, Philippines

Guiuan Church, one of the few in the country still with its original altars, carvings, painted ceiling and architecture still intact, is even more outstanding for being the only church in the country whose interiors are extensively decorated with natural shells embedded in the interior walls; that was when Kinna Kwan and me made a documentation project of every specific element of this precious hispacfilipino church. But, a few months later, the Typhoon “Yolanda” (Hayak storm) made first landfall at the town of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, devastating the town’s church of La Purisima Concepción, considered one of the finest and most beautiful Spanish colonial structures in the country.
